How does the Internet work? Well, roughly, this is how: |
A computer that is used to access the Internet is called "the client". You can think of it as your computer. Computers connect to the Internet through a network connection, either dial-up or dedicated.
The internet is made up of many interconnected servers ("hosts") -- computers which store information. Located all over the world, these machines can be huge supercomputers or regular personal computers. When the client requests information, it must first connect to the internet.
The Internet Service Provider (ISP) or the LAN make sure the client's request is routed properly to the correct server, and that the information that has been requested is sent back to the proper location. The ISP also can offer email, web hosting, and other services. You can find more ISPs by doing a search.
When you put it all together, it looks like this: |
The client connects to the internet via the ISP or LAN, requests information (documents), and the servers which store the information send it back through the ISP or LAN where the client reads it. |
is that clear?
Ok, so now let's talk about the web.
